Currently time is measured by the accumulation, modification, and notarization of documents. My documents, his documents, the documents of friends that are testifying for us. I would go so far as to say, at the moment, that the Road to Aus is paved with documentation of a scale I've never quite encountered before. I feel like a wrangler at a rodeo, trying to round them all up and keep them contained. They seem to have a life of their own, spontaneously growing new sprouts that demand watering.
Even simple things, like the definitions of 'notarized' and 'certified' must be carefully evaluated and cross-checked. Recently a few weeks and $50 was wasted in a misunderstanding about what was what in Australia vs the US. This rather defines much of my experience so far... you think you are speaking the same language, or have the same frames of reference, and then discover they are slightly different. Different enough to throw the game, require a shift of understanding or familiarity. Tip your rubbish in the bin, don't dump your garbage in the can!
